A Definitive
Guide to Hash

(aka Hashish)

What Is Hashish

What is Hash (aka Hashish)?

What is hash? Hash or hashish, the most readily available cannabis concentrate, is. extracted from the trichomes of the dried marijuana flower. Once the trichomes are harvested, extreme pressure and heat are used to make paste-like balls or cakes. Hash’s hallmark smell and flavour are due to the aromatic terpenes. Our all inclusive hash guide will get you familiar with what hash looks like, the benefits of using hash, how to smoke it and store it properly, as well as, the very beginnings of hash use.

Origins of HashishOrigins of Hash

Hashish is an Arabic word that translates to grass, but some believe it may also mean “Charas” (a hashish type resin made from live marijuana flowers and hand rolled into balls). Hash originated in India and the earliest form of hash was an Indica strain. In the mid 19th century, famous French authors such as Charles Baudelaire and Alexandre Dumas made hash en vogue. More than fifty years later, the US prohibition of the early 1900s forced hashish into the shadows.

In the 20th century, Morocco became a major producer of hash. Today, we see a lot of hash coming out of Afghanistan. India, Nepal, and Turkey are also some of the main producers of hash. Europe is the largest market for hash, by far. Since the legalization of marijuana, research firms are looking to tap into unexplored medicinal benefits of hash and other marijuana derivatives.

History of Hashish

Recent History of Hash in Canada

If you’ve been watching the news, you know that with the legalization of marijuana here in Canada, hash has soared in popularity. How exactly did this come to be though? Don’t worry as we will give you a quick synopsis here in our comprehensive hashish guide. The Marijuana Legalization efforts of recent years made the online sale of hash a possibility. The only real restriction on hash use is on the amount of grams someone can possess at any one time.

In 2019 via the Cannabis Act, our government legalized the sale of cannabis edibles, extracts, and topicals through special, government sanctioned dispensaries. Canadians now have access to all marijuana extracts and their by-products, both for recreational and medicinal purposes. Each product available to the public must pass a set of  rigorous requirements and underage use is strictly prohibited. The passage of this act made it possible to use a range of other products in Canada, such as vape juice. Any hash product that exceeds 1000 mg of THC will be packaged and distributed as 7.5 grams. For more info on government regulations, visit the Health Canada website.

Hashish RegulationsRegulation Regarding Hashish

Government regulations ensure you, the consumer, gets consistent, safe, and quality products. Due to the most recent regulations, Canadians can now buy concentrated cannabis that has been diluted so that it will vaporize when it meets heat. Our new government regulations make sure that companies are testing their products and meeting safety standards.

The Cannabis Act has made the process of enjoying hash supremely easy and safe. Online ordering from the comfort of your own home is now possible. Simply select your product, add to cart, pay, and then await delivery to your doorstep.

Hash Types

Types of Hash

Our hash guide explains the types of hash and how they differ based on how they were made.

It is important to know how hashish is being produced to know the value and components of the product one will be using.

Dry Sift HashKief Or Dry Sift Hash

This hash is produced by sifting and rubbing dried leaves over a woven screen. This ensures the trichomes fall through the mesh and make what is known as kief. It is easier to harvest the trichomes when the plant has been frozen. The kief is then pressed into hash either by hand or by machine. This process is popular in the following countries and typically named after the country it was made in:

Afghanistan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Morocco, and Turkey. It varies in color based on the production process. If done by hand, this is a delicate process that takes time to ensure good quality hashish.

Finger HashFinger Hash

Finger hash (also known as hand rubbed hash) is made by rubbing the dry bud in your hands in order to make a thick resin which is then scraped off and molded into the shape of bricks or patties. Finger has is brownish-red with a green tint to the interior at times due to some of the plant remaining in the hash. Hand rubbed hash is one of the oldest production methods.

Bubble Hash

Bubble Hash

The popular bubble hash, also known as ice water hash, has a quite high THC content and is a yellow honey color. This method was discovered by accident when pot farmers were experimenting with water extraction. The marijuana plant is frozen in order to isolate and persevere its potency and aroma then mixed with icy water, and then passed through bubble bags or filters.

This produces a sticky paste which is filtered even more (various times to ensure quality) before it is pressed into the final product with a feel akin to crystallized honey.

Master Sift HashMaster Sift Hash

John Galland invented a master sifter which made a new production method possible and which came to be aptly named master sift hash. This hash is typically shiny yellow, almost gold in color. Galland’s sifter made hash production much faster and ensured the final product was 100% hash.

Hash THCHow High Can You Go?

Your Hashish Guide to What Exactly Gets You High

The main components causing your high are terpenes and cannabinoids. There are 66 types of cannabinoids in marijuana.

THC (or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the cannabinoid that bears most of the responsibility for getting you high, while all the other cannabinoids are essentially THC’s little helpers. Cannabinoids attach to receptors in your brain’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) that result in a euphoric feeling. A fun fact is that THC is actually THCA when it is still raw in the marijuana buds. Once you heat the buds up, they convert THCA to THC…and voila, you get high!

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Cannabicyclol (CBL)
  • Cannabielsoin (CBE)
  • Cannabitriol (CBT)
  • Cannabinodiol (CBDL)

Terpenes are what gives weed its special aroma. There are 100 plus terpenes in cannabis and alongside the cannabinoids, they work to give you the full experience of getting high.

Main Terpenes Found in Cannabis

Myrcene

Cannabis produces a large quantity of this terpene which is known for its musky and somehow also fruity aroma. It has a sedating effect for the ultimate chill.

Limonene

This is the second most prolific terpene. This terpene can also be found in citrus fruits such as lemons and the like. The flavour and smell of lemons are specific to this terpene. It has a stress reducing effect.

Pinene

This terpene can also be found in pine trees. This terpene has been shown to increase alertness and memory retention.

Caryophyllene

A spicy, sharp undertone is characteristic of this terpene. It can also be found in spices such as rosemary and cinnamon. It is a terrific stress reliever. This terpene also acts as a cannabinoid.

Linalool

This is the hallmark smell of weed that most people associate with someone smoking marijuana nearby. It is a mood enhancer as well as a sedative to help you chill.

Terpinolene

Also found in lilacs and nutmegs, this terpene has a fruity smell that can increase your energy levels.

Bisabolol

This terpene is used by the beauty industry for its pleasing, floral smell. Bisabolol also can be used in first aid as pain relief for injuries.

Hash Guide:
How Long Will Hash Be In My System?

THC enters the body quickly within about 30 minutes. Absorption rate depends on the THC concentration and how the hash is consumed or taken.

Recreational hash users may experience an impairing high for up to 6 hours during which time they should not drive or operate any other vehicle. A heavy user may retain residual effects of hash for up to 1 month or more after the last use. We’ve included in our hash guide a quick look at how long THC lingers in different parts of your body.

Hair

Drug tests using hair strands can detect THC for up to 90 days. This is the most accurate drug test for THC as it can detect the cannabinoid several months after stopping use.

Blood

THC is usually not found in the bloodstream as THC only lasts in the blood for 3 to 4 hours after use. A blood test would have to be extremely well timed to find THC in the blood.

Urine

THC can be detected in the urine 3 to 30 days after the last use. More frequent use will cause the THC to remain present in the urine longer.

Saliva

Hashish residue may remain in saliva for 1 to 3 days after use. Brushing your teeth and drinking plenty of water may wash the residue away faster.

Your Hashish Guide to The 5 Variables that Affect How Long THC Remains Detectable

1. How Often You Use Hash

The frequency of use is one of the biggest influencers on how long THC remains in the body. A first timer may retain traces of THC for approximately 3 days whereas a daily user of hash may retain THC in their body for about a month after stopping use. For moderate recreational users (3-4 times a week use, for example), THC may remain in the system for about a week.

2. Potency of Your Hash

How potent the hash is or how high the THC concentration is the second biggest factor in how long THC remains detectable via common drug testing methods. The more THC, the longer your body needs to metabolize it.

3. The Amount of Hash You Used

While potency is an important role player, the amount of cannabis you take in is crucial as well. If you only had a few hits, you will not have much THC in your system. The more you use however, the longer you will need to shed the THC from your system.

4. Method of Consumption

How you take your hash comes into play too. Edibles require the body digest the product before it can access the THC and metabolize it, therefore the THC can remain in your body for a longer period. Smoking a joint or vaping gets the THC into your system quickly, but likewise, it will leave your system faster.

5. Your Individual Body Chemistry

Hash like all drugs affects everyone differently. Your individual makeup will determine how you react to cannabis and how it affects you. THC also binds to fats in the body, so the fat percentage of the user will affect how quickly the THC is metabolized.  Sometimes despite individual size people naturally have different tolerance levels and this will affect how fast THC leaves your system.

How to Smoke Hash

There is so much being said about how to smoke weed, but not hash; so we wanted to include the different ways to smoke hash in our hash guide. Marijuana Legalization efforts have brought hash to the attention of new users, so we especially want to share the best ways to smoke hash with those who may not know.

Smoking hashish in a joint

Break off a piece of hash spliff to place on your rolling paper. You can add tobacco if you wish. This is a great way to smoke with your buddies.

Smoking hashish in a pipe

Break off a piece of hash or several for better air flow and place in your pipe. Some users feel that this is a wasteful way to smoke hash as the hash burns inside the pipe, so the user does not get the full benefit.

Dabbing hashish

To dab your hash, be sure your banger is clean from the last use. Always clean after last use, so no residue remains when you use a different product in your glass banger. Bangers (aka oil rigs) come in varying sizes with either a 45 or 90 degree angle. Bubble hash is ideal for dabbing. Dabbing will ensure that the THC will be ignited and released slowly, so that you can enjoy a smoother experience.

Hot-knifing hashish

Some users heat a knife on the stove or over open flame, then add a chunk of hash to the knife (be sure to secure it with a paperclip). The smoke is then inhaled through a straw or something similar. If you have no other equipment on hand, this can work in a pinch.

Vaping hashish

Vaping hash is one of the most popular methods. A quality vape pen is essential. Many vape pens are specifically designed for smoking concentrated cannabis. Be sure to read the instruction manual that comes with your vape pen to ensure the best quality experience. As with anytime you dab hash, clean your device thoroughly afterwards. Vaping is one of the healthiest ways to use hash.

Smoking hashish in a bong

Smoking hash in a bong allows the smoke to cool inside the bong before being inhaled into your lungs. For many, this is the preferred method of using hash. Break your hash into small pieces before placing in the bong to help induce better airflow.

Hash Guide to Dosages

1-2.5 mg of THC

can relieve minor pain, stress, and anxiety. This is the suggested dosage for beginners.

2.5-15 mg of THC

can bring even greater symptom relief for individuals with chronic or underlying issues. Restless sleepers, cancer patients, and antisocial personalities may want to try this dosage. This level of THC is liable to cause decreased coordination and altered perceptions.

15-30 mg of THC

is for accustomed users as a beginner may experience paranoia if they begin smoking hashish with this level of THC. This is an  adequate dose for insomniacs.

30-50 mg of THC

will cause extreme euphoria. An individual who does not absorb cannabinoids well may want to move up to this dose.
